Dorothy Pattison Hospital, Walsall

Dorothy Pattison Hospital, Walsall

Scheduled to open in 2025, Dorothy Pattison Hospital in Walsall is a cutting-edge £24.3m mental health unit designed to provide inpatient care for older adults, replacing the existing Bloxwich Hospital.

The purpose-built facility offers 25 private en-suite rooms, alongside spacious communal areas, expanded therapy spaces, and modern ward layouts aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and dignity in patient care.

Appointed by M&E contractor Dodd Group, Palcon Energy Services Ltd led the design and installation of the Building Management System (BMS), ensuring optimal environmental control and energy efficiency.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, the hospital utilizes Air Source Heat Pumps for primary heating and hot water, complemented by extensive underfloor heating throughout the building. Three central MCP control panels, each fitted with Trend controllers, manage key plant systems within an open-platform architecture, ensuring seamless system integration and adaptability.

Extending BMS functionality across the hospital, 22 local controllers govern 108 underfloor heating circuits, optimizing comfort and energy use across designated areas.

Utilising Trend Tonn8 controllers, to facilitate direct interfacing with critical systems including Packaged Air Handling Units, VRF Air Conditioning Systems and Mechanical Heat Recovery Units allows the site facilities team to monitor and control all connected services in real-time, ensuring smooth operation and efficient resource utilization.

Energy data collected via the BMS is automatically transferred to the K²n cloud-based platform, allowing for detailed energy tracking and operational analysis. By integrating electricity and utility meters, as well as pulse meters for water supply, the system provides actionable insights into building performance, ensuring data-driven efficiency improvements.

Dorothy Pattison Hospital represents a modern approach to patient care, blending innovative environmental management with sustainability-driven design. Through advanced BMS technology, the facility ensures optimal comfort, reliability, and operational efficiency, setting a new benchmark for mental health facilities.
