Cromwell Hospital, London

Cromwell Hospital, London

As part of BUPA’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, Cromwell Hospital (an internationally renowned private hospital in London’s South Kensington) embarked on an ambitious refurbishment of its core ventilation systems. The project aimed to reduce carbon emissions by 300 tonnes per year (a 17% reduction from 2022 levels) while enhancing air quality and comfort for both patients and staff.

The project involved the full replacement of 19 Ventilation Air Handling Units (AHUs) across the hospital’s basement and rooftop plant rooms. Given the hospital’s continuous operations, the installation required a meticulously coordinated schedule to ensure uninterrupted medical services and patient care.

Entrusted by principal M&E contractor Hollywell Building Services, Palcon Energy Services Ltd led the design, installation, and commissioning of 11 new dedicated Form 2 control panels containing all the required switchgear to control and serve the new AHUs as part of the building management package.

Based on Trend IQ4e controllers and selected to match and extend the current site BMS infrastructure, each control panel takes full direct control of its respective air handling unit with duct pressure control providing volume and speed control of the air handling units ‘fan banks’ ensuring that failure of any 1 fan will not result in total loss of ventilation.

Based on the Trend IQ4e controller range selected to match and extend the hospital’s existing Building Management System (BMS), each takes direct control of the AHU’s components providing full operational awareness all the while enhancing operational efficiency. The use of multiple EC fans in ‘banks’ combined with duct pressure control to regulate airflow volume and fan speeds, guarantees a single fan failure does not lead to a complete ventilation shutdown.

With all systems connected to the centralised Trend IQVision Supervisor, the hospital’s facilities team are provided with real-time insights into operational performance, environmental control, and system optimization. This data-driven approach ensures continuous monitoring, proactive maintenance, and overall improved energy efficiency.
